2023 July 19 morning<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jochen M\u00f6hr has photographed several Malacosoma<\/em><\/strong> moths in Metchosin.\u00a0 We have two species; M. californicum<\/em> and M. disstria<\/em>.\u00a0 The caterpillars are quite distinct, but the adult moths can be difficult to distinguish.\u00a0 I believe (writes Jeremy Tatum) that all five of the moths below may be M. californicum.\u00a0 <\/em>However, I have labelled two of them as \u201cProbably\u201d M. californicum, <\/em>\u00a0to indicate that I am not completely certain, and there is a (small) possibility that these may be M. disstria<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Jochen sends pictures of two more moths, one of which is easy \u2013 the other not so!<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Libby Avis writes, of the moth below: This moth is a Crambidae, subfamily Scopariinae for sure, but they\u2019re hard to get to species. Most likely a Scoparia <\/em>or a Eudonia<\/em>. Best guess (only a guess, not an ID!) is Eudonia commortalis<\/em>.\u00a0 [Jeremy Tatum ventures:\u00a0 Libby is right to be cautious \u2013 though her \u201cguess\u201d looks like a pretty good \u201cguess\u201d to me!]<\/p>\n
