June 22"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2023 June 22<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Two insects, a bug and a moth, not at all related but both bearing the species name <em>dimidiata<\/em>, arrived today.\u00a0\u00a0 The bug is sometimes spelled <em>dimiata<\/em>.\u00a0 For the \u201ccorrect\u201d spelling, one is supposed to use the spelling given in the original scientific publication of the organism \u2013 usually in some very ancient and obscure journal.\u00a0 I have not seen the original description by Thomas Say, though I believe it was <em>dimiata<\/em>.\u00a0 Nevertheless, <em>dimidiata<\/em> seems to be used today at least as often as <em>dimiata<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" californicum <\/em>and a female <em>Malacosoma disstria.\u00a0 <\/em>In <em>M. californicum, <\/em>the two transverse lines are bicolorous.\u00a0 The PM line is edged with pale distad, and the AM line is edged with pale basad.\u00a0 The transverse lines of <em>M. disstria <\/em>are unicolorous.\u00a0 Note also in <em>M. disstria <\/em>the strongly marked veins, particularly between the transverse lines.\u00a0 The veins are not nearly as obvious in <em>M. californicum<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 If I can, I\u2019ll try and get two males and show them later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
