{"id":18713,"date":"2023-06-05T08:29:33","date_gmt":"2023-06-05T15:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=18713"},"modified":"2023-09-14T21:44:59","modified_gmt":"2023-09-15T04:44:59","slug":"2023-june-5-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=18713","title":{"rendered":"2023 June 5 morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2023 June 5 morning<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>We open this morning\u2019s posting with the successful identification by Dr Rob Cannings and Bill Savale of what we regard as rather obscure organisms, which we initially thought no one could possibly identify!\u00a0 First is a <strong>Pacific Forktail <\/strong>damselfly bearing some small objects on its underside, photographed by Gordon Hart\u00a0 in the Highlands on June 4.\u00a0 Dr Cannings writes:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are the sessile larvae of aquatic mites (adults are free-living in the water) in the genus <em>Arrenurus<\/em>. They are common on the adults of many Odonata species. See \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrachnidia\">Hydrachnidia &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0 and <a href=\"https:\/\/indiabiodiversity.org\/biodiv\/content\/documents\/document-7298b0f3-7f6f-4fb8-83ac-27f3613c10bf\/300.pdf\">300.pdf (indiabiodiversity.org)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This mite genus also attacks other insects with aquatic stages in their life cycles, such as mosquitoes, chironomids, aquatic Hemiptera, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18715 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Forktail-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Forktail-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Forktail-1024x688.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Forktail-768x516.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Forktail.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><em>Arrenurus <\/em>sp. (Acari:\u00a0 Hydrachnidia)<br \/>\non <em>Ischnura cervula <\/em>(Odo.: Coenagrionidae)<br \/>\nGordon Hart<\/p>\n<p>The other obscure organism was some galls found on the leaves of Sasaktoonberry <em>Amelanchier alnifolia<\/em> by Aziza Cooper.\u00a0 These were identified by Billl Savale as galls formed by the <strong>gall midge <em>Blaesodiplosis <\/em><\/strong>sp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18716 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/F-Plant-saskatoongalls-Potholes-1b-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/F-Plant-saskatoongalls-Potholes-1b-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/F-Plant-saskatoongalls-Potholes-1b.jpg 577w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/>Galls on <em>Amelanchier<\/em> formed by <em>Blaesodiplosis <\/em>sp.<br \/>\n(Dip.: Cecidomyidae)<br \/>\nAziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, June 4, the Victoria NHS held its Monthly Butterfly Walk led by Gordon Hart.\u00a0 Aziza Cooper reports:<\/p>\n<p>Seven people found a total of nine species:<\/p>\n<p><u>On Mt Tolmie reservoir, 1 pm:<br \/>\n<\/u><strong>Western Tiger Swallowtail &#8211; 1<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Pale Tiger Swallowtail -3<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Anise Swallowtail &#8211; 1<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Lorquin&#8217;s Admiral &#8211; 1<br \/>\nCa<\/strong><strong>bbage White &#8211; 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>At Mcintyre Reservoir:<br \/>\n<\/u><strong>Cabbage White &#8211; 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>At Island View Beach:<br \/>\n<\/u><strong>Common (Vancouver Island) Ringlet &#8211; 2<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Pale Tiger Swallowtail &#8211; 1<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Lorquin&#8217;s Admiral &#8211; 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>At Mt.
