{"id":176,"date":"2015-11-29T02:30:24","date_gmt":"2015-11-29T10:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=176"},"modified":"2016-03-13T16:37:58","modified_gmt":"2016-03-13T23:37:58","slug":"november-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=176","title":{"rendered":"November 28"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">2015 November 28<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; Here&rsquo;s a <strong>Firebrat<\/strong> from my Saanich apartment building &#8211; mercifully not from my own suite, from where Marlin Smyth expelled them earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\">&nbsp; Are these animals insects?&nbsp; They certainly used to be thought of as insects, but I believe that in recent years they have been expelled from the Class Insecta.&nbsp; There are taxonomic changes every year, but it is my understanding that the Phylum Arthropoda now includes a Subphylum Hexapoda, which in turn includes two Classes, Insecta and Entognatha.&nbsp; Several Orders of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">primitively wingless creatures<\/span> &#8211; including the Order Thyatira (to which the Firebrat belongs) &#8211; now comprise the new Class Entognatha.&nbsp; Thus the Firebrat is no longer an insect.
