2022 November 15<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Identification of Melanoplus <\/em>Grasshoppers.<\/u><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>On November 1 and 4 we posted photographs of grasshoppers by Cheryl Hoyle and Aziza Cooper.\u00a0 These were kindly identified for us by James Miskelly as Melanoplus sanguinipes.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>According to Merrill Peterson, there are about 50 species of grasshopper in the genus Melanoplus<\/em> in the Pacific Northwest.\u00a0 We have therefore labelled previous photographs of Melanoplus<\/em> on this site as merely \u201cMelanoplus <\/em>sp.\u201d\u00a0 James tells us, however, that only three of these occur regularly on Vancouver Island, and they are not impossible to identify.\u00a0 These are:\u00a0 M. sanguinipes,\u00a0 M. femurrrubrum <\/em>and M. bivittatus.\u00a0 <\/em>James writes:\u00a0 The species that is most similar to sanguinipes<\/em> on Vancouver Island is M.<\/em> femurrubrum<\/em>, which does not have dark stripes on the outer face of the hind femur and (in our area) is rarely found outside of salt marsh habitat.\u00a0 The third Melanoplus<\/em> on Vancouver Island is M. bivittatus<\/em>, which looks quite different.\u00a0 It has a light stripe on each side that extends from above the eye through the pronotum and down the tegmen.\u00a0 The outer face of the hind femur is dark above the midline and light below. It’s found in relatively moist meadows.<\/p>\n

So \u2013 that should make it easy for all those who know what a pronotum, a tegmen and a femur are.\u00a0 Of course, we have other grasshoppers to contend with, which are not in the genus Melanoplus<\/em>.<\/p>\n
