The only other butterflies we saw were <strong>Cabbage Whites<\/strong> and the odd <strong>Woodland<\/strong> <strong>Skipper<\/strong>.&nbsp; &nbsp;Also, Jeff saw a <strong>Common Green Darner<\/strong> at the end of Dock Road.&nbsp; [Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; As every dragonfly-watcher knows, the Common Green Darner, one of our larger and more spectacular dragonflies, isn&rsquo;t all that common!]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Richard Rycraft saw this moth in his house on September 3.&nbsp; Kindly identified by Libby Avis as <strong><em>Caradrina montana<\/em><\/strong><em>.&nbsp; <\/em>According to the Pacific NW website, this moth is common, widespread and nearly ubiquitous in the Pacific Northwest.&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; That may well be so &ndash; but I have never seen one!&nbsp; It has appeared only once before on this site &ndash; in 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Moth-2-Sept-3-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"285\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Caradrina montana <\/em>(Lep.: Noctuidae)&nbsp; Richard Rycraft<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Ian Cooper has been photographing, in View Royal, a number of interesting creatures with which not all of us are very familiar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; We don&rsquo;t know for sure what the bug below is, but it may be a <strong>Damsel Bug<\/strong> of the Family Nabidae &ndash; possibly even the genus <em>Nabis<\/em>.&nbsp; This is a predaceous bug, preying on other insects rather than sucking plant juices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC03911ccs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Possibly <em>Nabis <\/em>(Hem.: Nabidae)&nbsp; Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC03706ccs-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"483\" height=\"387\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Possibly <em>Nabis <\/em>(Hem.: Nabidae)&nbsp; Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Next is a wingless ichneumonid, probably <strong><em>Gelis<\/em>.&nbsp; <\/strong>It is believed to be a hyperparasitoid &#8211; that is to say it parasitises other parasitoid insects, such as the Braconidae.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC03823c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"531\" height=\"371\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Probably <em>Gelis <\/em>(Hym.: Ichneumonidae)&nbsp; Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Next may be an immature (nymph) pentatomid bug:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC03898c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Probably a nymph of a stink bug (Hem.: Pentatomidae)&nbsp; Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC03814cs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Springtail, <em>Orchesella villosa <\/em>(Coll.: Orchesellidae) Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; More familiar is the spider <strong><em>Araneus diademadus<\/em><\/strong>, although the photographs below show the less familiar male:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC03677c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"473\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Araneus diadematus <\/em>(Ara.: Araneidae)&nbsp; Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/DSC03686cc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"438\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Araneus diadematus <\/em>(Ara.: Araneidae)&nbsp; Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2022 September 5 evening &nbsp;Colias alert! &nbsp;&nbsp; Jeff Gaskin and Kirsten Mills saw an Orange Sulphur on the trail off the end of Lochmanetz Road at Cowichan Bay.
