{"id":16148,"date":"2022-08-02T16:56:34","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T23:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=16148"},"modified":"2022-08-02T16:57:26","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T23:57:26","slug":"2022-august-2-afternoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=16148","title":{"rendered":"2022 August 2 afternoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"postie-post\">\n<div>\n<p><strong>2022 August 2 afternoon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>On July 15 we showed a photograph of a tiny <strong>Red Admiral <\/strong>&nbsp;caterpillar.&nbsp; On July 29 we showed what progress it had made by July 27.&nbsp; (It was already a chrysalis.)&nbsp; Let&rsquo;s have a look and see if it has made any further progress today:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Red-Adm-ad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"646\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Red Admiral <em>Vanessa atalanta <\/em>(Lep.: Nymphalidae) &nbsp; Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>It has emerged as an adult!&nbsp;&nbsp; Unfortunately, &nbsp;I had an appointment to keep and I was unable to spend the time to get a photograph of its beautiful upperside.&nbsp; I released the butterfly on Buddleia in the Finnerty Gardens at UVic.&nbsp;&nbsp; I saw two <strong>Woodland Skippers <\/strong>in the Gardens &ndash; the first I have seen this year<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Jochen M&ouml;hr writes from Metchosin:&nbsp; This morning&#8217;s lonely visitor at the light was what I think is <strong><em>Spargania magniolata<\/em>.&nbsp; <\/strong>[Libby Avis agrees!]<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/image001.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Spargania magniolata <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)&nbsp; Jochen M&ouml;hr<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; Jeff Gaskin writes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; Kirsten Mills and I drove a lot around the Nanaimo logging roads yesterday, August 1st.&nbsp; On Northwest Bay logging road we found<strong> 3 Hydaspe Fritillaries, 5 Common Wood Nymphs, 6 Pale<\/strong> and <strong>4 Western Tiger Swallowtails <\/strong>and<strong> 17 Lorquin&#8217;s Admirals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; On the roads up Mount Cokeley, we found <strong>an Anna&#8217;s Blue, 11 Hydaspe Fritillaries, 3 Pale <\/strong>and<strong> 7 Western Tiger Swallowtails, 2 Mourning Cloaks,&nbsp; 1 Satyr Comma and 10 Lorquin&#8217;s Admirals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Today, I saw a <strong>Western Tiger Swallowtail<\/strong> in Esquimalt Gorge Park.&nbsp; Dragonflies I saw also in the park included a female <strong>Western Pondhawk<\/strong>, and a <strong>Blue-eyed Darner<\/strong>.
