{"id":16086,"date":"2022-07-25T17:26:59","date_gmt":"2022-07-26T00:26:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=16086"},"modified":"2022-07-25T17:33:30","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T00:33:30","slug":"2022-july-25-afternoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=16086","title":{"rendered":"2022 July 25 afternoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"postie-post\">\n<div>\n<p><strong>2022 July 25 afternoon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Jochen M&ouml;hr writes from Metchosin:<\/p>\n<p>We continue&nbsp;to have an abundance of <strong>Essex Skippers<\/strong> here &#8211; wherever I go I disturb them from flowers or grasses.&nbsp; I did not spot a single Woodland Skipper yet.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We also continue to have our two (at least) <strong>Lorquin&#8217;s Admirals<\/strong>.&nbsp; They have been here essentially since July 8 or so, that is for more than two weeks.&nbsp; I think they may be competing&nbsp;males rather than a couple.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the evening&nbsp;at the&nbsp;light, we continue to have an abundance of <strong><em>Malacosoma<\/em><\/strong>s.&nbsp; &nbsp;Mostly females, but every&nbsp;now and then a male.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And on top of that, I am gratified by the appearance of numerous greenish &#8220;Emeralds&#8221;.&nbsp; Tonight at least three Common Emeralds&nbsp; <strong><em>Hemithea &nbsp;aestivaria<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp; But with these and <strong><em>Campaea perlata<\/em><\/strong> yesterday, and <strong><em>Nemoria unitaria<\/em><\/strong> the day before, we had three of these green beauties in a row!&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Malacosoma-californicum-P1680897.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"482\" height=\"362\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Malacosoma californicum <\/em>(Lep.: Lasiocampidae)&nbsp; Jochen M&ouml;hr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/perhaps-Hypena-something-P1680871.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;Lep.: Crambidae &ndash; Scopariinae.&nbsp; Jochen M&ouml;hr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Hemithea-aestivatia-P1680890.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"378\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Common Emerald <em>Hemithea aestivaria <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)&nbsp;&nbsp; Jochen M&ouml;hr<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; Seeing Val George&rsquo;s photograph in this morning&rsquo;s posting of a <em>Polyphylla <\/em>beetle reminded me that in recent years there has been uncertainty here about the local status and the identification of <em>P. decemlineata <\/em>&nbsp;and <em>P. crinita<\/em>, so I asked coleopterist Charlene Wood to comment.&nbsp; This is what she wrote:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s not possible for me to see the thick hairs on the pronotum, the pronotum also tends to be more red compared with the elytra in this species, which is evident in Val&rsquo;s photo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps all in our area are <em>crinita<\/em> according to the expert, Andrew Smith. Many records of <em>decemlineata<\/em> are misidentified along the west coast and Andrew noted that <em>decemlineata<\/em> might not occur in British Columbia at all.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Val&rsquo;s photo is of a male.
