{"id":15857,"date":"2022-06-30T17:25:50","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T00:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=15857"},"modified":"2022-07-01T10:10:24","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T17:10:24","slug":"2022-june-30-afternoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=15857","title":{"rendered":"2022 June 30 afternoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"postie-post\">\n<div>\n<p><strong>2022 June 30 afternoon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes: Some viewers have noted that moths have been rather scarce this year compared with other recent years.\u00a0 I hope the one shown below may compensate to some extent.\u00a0 Reared from a caterpillar found on Willowherb in the Martindale Valley in July last year, the adult moth emerged today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/H-gallii-ad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bedstraw Hawk Moth <em>Hyles gallii\u00a0 <\/em>(Lep.: Sphingidae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 The spellings <em>gallii<\/em> and <em>galii<\/em> are to be found in the literature.\u00a0 Which is correct?\u00a0 The name comes from the plants known as bedstraws <em>Galium <\/em>sp., which is one of the larval foodplants.\u00a0 Therefore, it <em>ought<\/em> to be <em>galii,<\/em> oughtn\u2019t it?\u00a0 The species was first described and distinguished from the Elephant and Spurge Hawk Moths nearly 250 years ago in an obscure and long-defunct German journal.
