{"id":15653,"date":"2022-05-26T10:32:16","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T17:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=15653"},"modified":"2022-05-27T10:26:45","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T17:26:45","slug":"2022-may-26-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=15653","title":{"rendered":"2022 May 26 morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"postie-post\">\n<div>\n<p><strong>2022 May 26 morning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Gordon Hart sends photographs of caterpillars of the <strong>Sheep Moth <em>Hemileuca eglanterina<\/em> <\/strong>from Snowberry in Uplands Park, May 24.\u00a0 In the second photograph you can see the cast skins (exuviae) of the previous instar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sheep-moth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"867\" height=\"586\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sheep Moth <em>Hemileuca eglanterina <\/em>(Lep.: Saturniidae)\u00a0 Gordon Hart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Sheep-moth2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"826\" height=\"616\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sheep Moth <em>Hemileuca eglanterina <\/em>(Lep.: Saturniidae)\u00a0 Gordon Hart<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 I have noticed (writes Jeremy Tatum) that some recent authors (not Gordon!) have taken to calling this moth the \u201cElegant\u201d Sheep Moth.\u00a0 This is strongly to be discouraged \u2013 it shows ignorance of etymology rather than knowledge of entomology.\u00a0 The species name <em>eglanterina<\/em> is derived from one of the larval foodplants, the sweetbrier (sometimes spelled briar) rose <em>Rosa eglanteria<\/em>, and has nothing whatever to do with \u201celegant\u201d.\u00a0 The exact etymological origin of <em>eglanteria<\/em> is somewhat uncertain , but it\u00a0 is believed to mean \u201cspiny\u201d or \u201csharp\u201d \u2013 the sweetbrier has quite large spines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These caterpillars are fairly conspicuous at this time of year, so viewers are reminded that they should not be handled.\u00a0 They have poisonous spines of their own, and can give you quite a rash.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Tatum writes: I happened to notice the egg shown below at Munn Road yesterday \u2013 it was hard to miss.\u00a0 Any moth-er will instantly know what it is.\u00a0 From its shape and form it is a geometrid ovum, and it is fairly large \u2013 so we have a large geometrid moth.\u00a0 The leaves have spines, and will be recognized as <em>Mahonia<\/em>.\u00a0 A large geometrid moth whose larval foodplant is <em>Mahonia<\/em> could scarcely be anything other than <strong><em>Coryphista meadii<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/IMG_4182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"715\" height=\"541\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Coryphista meadii <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2022 May 26 morning \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gordon Hart sends photographs of caterpillars of the Sheep Moth Hemileuca eglanterina from Snowberry in Uplands Park, May 24.\u00a0 In the second photograph you can see the cast skins (exuviae) of the previous instar. &nbsp;
