They are called money spiders in the UK and dwarf spiders in the US.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/J-Spider-tiny-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Money spider <em>Erigone <\/em>sp.\u00a0 (Ara.:\u00a0 Linyphiidae)\u00a0\u00a0 Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rosemary Jorna writes from the Kemp Lake area: A real mystery from my Big-leaf Maple today. \u00a0I have seen them before on the bark in the last few weeks.\u00a0 If it was in the water I would think caddisfly \u00a0&#8211; \u00a0but on the maple?<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 The first time I saw one of these I was equally puzzled.\u00a0 It looked very, very like a caddisfly larva \u2013 but a long way from water?\u00a0 It was Claudia Copley who put me on to the moth Family Tineidae (same Family as the clothes moths.)\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0A common species here is\u00a0 <em>Phereoeca uterella\u00a0 <\/em><em>&#8211; <\/em>this might be Rosemary\u2019s one.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PA310201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"389\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Caterpillar of tineid moth in case \u2013 possibly <em>Phereoeca uterella <\/em>(Lep.: Tineidae)Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After that hard work, it was a relief to get an easier one \u2013 already identified for us \u2013 from Gordon Hart, who writes:\u00a0 On Whiffin Spit, at least two <strong><em>Autographa californica<\/em><\/strong> were nectaring on purple or pink flowers of an unidentified succulent beach plant; and on Billings Spit, several were flying around the Ivy which is just coming into bloom. I have attached a photo of one at Whiffin Spit.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge with this one is to identify the flower.\u00a0 How about <em>Cakile edentula <\/em>or <em>C. maritima<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Added later:\u00a0 Our viewers are always up to a challenge.\u00a0 Steven Roias writes:\u00a0 It is<em> Cakile maritima<\/em>. The two species are very easy to distinguish, and although the image isn&#8217;t ideal for plant ID purposes, there&#8217;s enough detail to draw from.
