{"id":14982,"date":"2021-09-22T17:27:19","date_gmt":"2021-09-23T00:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=14982"},"modified":"2021-09-23T17:23:58","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T00:23:58","slug":"2021-september-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=14982","title":{"rendered":"2021 September 22"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2021 September 22<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Say goodbye to Summer, and welcome to Autumn.\u00a0\u00a0 The declination of the Sun was zero at 12:21 pm PDT today.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Gaskin reports that Kirsten Mills saw two <strong>Lorquin\u2019s Admirals <\/strong>yesterday, September 21.\u00a0 \u00a0 One was seen on the Cedar Hill Golf Course, and the other was seen while Kirsten was driving along Royal Oak Avenue near Lochside School.\u00a0\u00a0 These are late dates for Lorquin\u2019s Admiral, but not unprecedented.\u00a0 For example, in 2019 one was seen as late as September 25.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Hart sends photographs of two flies and a moth.\u00a0 We thank Jeff Skevington for identification of the flies, and Libby Avis for the moth.<\/p>\n<p>Of the first fly, Dr Skevington writes:\u00a0 It is a female <em>Dasysyrphus intrudens<\/em> (a complex of species but currently all bearing this name so you can post it as this species).\u00a0\u00a0 The second is the Drone Fly <em>Eristalis tenax<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/fly-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"431\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Dasysyrphus intrudens<\/em> (Dip.: Syrphidae)\u00a0 Gordon Hart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Drone-Fly.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"529\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Drone Fly <em>Eristalis tenax<\/em>\u00a0 (Dip.: Syrphidae) Gordon Hart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The moth also belongs to a complex of species &#8211; although they do have different names\u00a0 &#8211; in\u00a0 the genus <em>Parabagrotis.\u00a0 <\/em>There are several species, and a good case could be made for identifying Gordon&#8217;s moth as any of them &#8211; or for rejecting any of them.\u00a0 Thanks to Libby for identifying the genus.\u00a0 Prudence suggests leaving it as the genus level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Moth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"657\" height=\"544\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Parabagrotis\u00a0<\/em>sp.
