{"id":14693,"date":"2021-08-03T17:42:25","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T00:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=14693"},"modified":"2021-08-03T17:46:09","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T00:46:09","slug":"2021-august-3-afternoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=14693","title":{"rendered":"2021 August 3 afternoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2021 August 3 afternoon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>On August 1, Aziza Cooper found and photographed two different <strong><em>Catocala<\/em> <\/strong>species both at the Swan Lake Nature House.&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>Catocala<\/em>s are exciting at the best of times, but to find two of them at the same time and place is particularly thrilling.&nbsp; Unfortunately, although these are large and exciting moths, it is a large genus, and the several species are hard to identify, even if you manage to see the colourful hind wings that <em>Catocala<\/em>s have.&nbsp; Thanks to Libby Avis for her efforts in identifying them.&nbsp; Libby writes:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Brown one looks like <strong><em>C. aholibah<\/em><\/strong> to me. Associated with oaks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Grey one &#8211; several options. Does she have a shot showing even a part of the underwing? Looks as if it might be <strong><em>C. relicta<\/em><\/strong> which is the only one which has a black and white underwing. Other options would all have red &amp; black underwings&nbsp; &#8211; could be<em> unijuga<\/em> or <em>semirelicta<\/em> or even something else.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/A-Moth-brnwht-1a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"460\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Catocala aholibah <\/em>(Lep.: Erebidae &ndash; Erebinae) Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/A-Moth-greywht-1a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"618\" height=\"404\" \/>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Catocala <\/em>(probably <em>relicta<\/em>) (Lep.: Erebidae &ndash; Erebinae)&nbsp; Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Most of us, when we visit Cowichan Station, walk along the track north away from Victoria, but today Ron and Nora Flower walked towards Victoria and was rewarded with around six to eight <strong>Mylitta<\/strong> <strong>Crescents<\/strong>.
