On June 16 afternoon we posted a remarkable picture by Gordon Hart of a fly in flight, which I had misidentified as a probable <em>Eristalis <\/em>(Syrphidae).\u00a0 \u00a0We are grateful \u00a0to Claudia Copley for pointing out that it is actually <em>Hybomitra <\/em>(Tabanidae).\u00a0 See the entry for June 16 afternoon for further details.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy continues:\u00a0 For some time I have been trying to photograph both sexes of our two <em>Malacosoma <\/em>species, but a male <em>M. disstria <\/em>has so far eluded me.\u00a0 \u00a0I thought I had maybe photographed one this morning, but on second look, while I think it is <em>disstria<\/em>, I am not sure of its sex.\u00a0 In any case it is one of the most undistinguished moths I have come across.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_4017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"286\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Malacosoma disstria <\/em>(Lep.: Lasiocampidae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This tiny caterpillar, from a willow near Blenkinsop Lake and photographed against a miilimetre scale, also cannot at present claim any particularly distinguished appearance.\u00a0 But next Spring it will be very distinguished indeed \u2013 it will be a <strong>Tiger Swallowtail <\/strong>butterfly<strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_4016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"281\" \/><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Tiger Swallowtail <em>Papilio rutulus<\/em>\/<em>eurymedon <\/em>(Lep.; Papilionidae)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Val \u00a0George sends a photograph of a <strong>June Beetle<\/strong> from Langford on July 9.\u00a0 This beetle has recently been split into two species \u2013 <em>Polyphylla decemlineata<\/em>\u00a0 and <em>P. crinita<\/em> \u2013 and we are still struggling on this site to distinguish between the two, so we\u2019ll leave it for the time being as an either\/or.\u00a0\u00a0 Whichever one it is, it inspired Val\u2019s five-year-old grandson to aver that he is going to be an entomologist when he grows up.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/webmailprod.uvic_.ca_.jpg\" alt=\"\" flower.\u00a0 We saw four <strong>Western Tiger Swallowtails,<\/strong> one <strong>Red Admiral<\/strong> and lots of <strong>Cabbage Whites<\/strong>. \u00a0So things are starting to look good
