Here are photographs of two comma<\/strong> butterflies, which emerged from their chrysalides in the last few days.\u00a0 Commas habitually rest face downwards.\u00a0\u00a0 Both are females.\u00a0 Unfortunately I didn\u2019t manage to photograph the uppersides. \u00a0The colour renderings are, I think, accurate.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Val George sends photos of the two tiger swallowtails<\/strong>, suggesting that I show them side-by-side to show the features that I mentioned in the June 18 posting.\u00a0 Alas, my computer skills are only up to showing them one above the other!\u00a0\u00a0 Viewers will notice that I prefer, on this site, to retain the name \u201ctiger\u201d for both species \u2013 some recent authors drop the \u201ctiger\u201d from eurymedon<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Cheryl\u00a0 Hoyle sends a photograph of a katydid <\/strong>(also known as bush cricket<\/strong>) from her back yard in View Royal yesterday.\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 I\u2019m no expert on katydids (or on anything else for that matter), but I believe this one is probably Meconema thalassina<\/em>.\u00a0 We don\u2019t see many katydids here, and I believe this species, the one most often seen, is not native to our area.<\/p>\n
