She also saw a <strong>Sheep Moth<\/strong> caterpillar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14284\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/June-18-1TS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/June-18-1TS.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/June-18-1TS-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Western Tiger Swallowtail <em>Papilio rutulus <\/em>(Lep.: Papilionidae)\u00a0 Marie O\u2019Shaughnessy<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Tatum comments:\u00a0 This, I think, is an unmistakeable <em>rutulus<\/em>;\u00a0 <em>eurymedon<\/em> is much paler and the black stripes are thicker.\u00a0\u00a0 Nevertheless, observers, including myself, sometimes find that we are not certain which of our two species of tiger swallowtail we are seeing.\u00a0 Is the backfround colour pale enough for <em>eurymedon<\/em>?\u00a0 Is it yellow enough for <em>rutulus<\/em>?\u00a0 Are the black stripes thick enough for <em>eurymedon<\/em>?\u00a0 Thin enough for <em>rutulus<\/em>?\u00a0 Here are two criteria that I use, in addition to the paleness or brightness of the yellow.\u00a0 Viewers may see a recent close-up of <em>eurymedon <\/em>on May 27 morning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Look at the first (proximal \u2013 i.e. starting from the body) yellow stripe.\u00a0 In <em>rutulus<\/em> it is wider than the adjacent (next outward) black stripe.\u00a0 In <em>eurymedon<\/em> it is narrower.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Look at the crescent immediately at the base of the \u201ctail\u201d on the hindwing.\u00a0 In <em>rutulus<\/em> it is yellow.\u00a0 It <em>eurymedon<\/em> it is red.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t guarantee that from now on no one (especially not myself) will ever be uncertain again! caterpillar, warns Jeremy Tatum, can give you a rash if you handle it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The following day, June 17, Jeremy Tatum reported three <strong>Painted Ladies <\/strong>near the Jeffery Pine on Mount Tolmie, 6:00 pm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Gaskin writes:\u00a0 Kirsten Mills and I saw a rather ragged <strong>Satyr Comma<\/strong> on June 16, at Beckwith Park.\u00a0
