{"id":14092,"date":"2021-05-30T16:50:02","date_gmt":"2021-05-30T23:50:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=14092"},"modified":"2021-06-01T17:31:58","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T00:31:58","slug":"may-30-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=14092","title":{"rendered":"May 30"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2021 May 30<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The caterpillar of <strong><em>Malacosoma californicum <\/em> <\/strong>is so abundant and ubiquitous that we sometimes forget that it is in fact a very handsome beast!\u00a0\u00a0 So here&#8217;s a close look at one by Jochen M\u00f6hr:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 567px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pastedImage-101.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Malacosoma californicum <\/em>(Lep.: Lasiocampidae)\u00a0 Jochen M\u00f6hr<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 581px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pastedImage-102.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Malacosoma californicum <\/em>(Lep.: Lasiocampidae)\u00a0 Jochen M\u00f6hr<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Aziza Cooper photographed a flying <strong>insect<\/strong> with very long legs and abdomen at Sooke Potholes on May 29.\u00a0 Well, writes Jeremy Tatum, I agree with the Class <strong>Insecta<\/strong>, and I can go further and say Order <strong>Hymenoptera<\/strong>.\u00a0 After that it gets a little more diffficult, but I think I&#8217;m fairly (although not absolutely) certain that the Family is <strong>Ichneumonidae<\/strong>.\u00a0 That cuts it down to about 1000 species in the Pacific Northwest.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;d be approaching the area of speculation if I were to suggest Genus <strong><em>Therion<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image006.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pastedImage-103.png\" width=\"597.6\" height=\"444.3692307692308\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Ichneumonid wasp, possibly <em>Therion <\/em>sp. (Hym.: Ichneumonidae)\u00a0\u00a0 Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>She also photographed a <strong>bee<\/strong>, and we&#8217;ll see if we can come up with an identification in the next few days.\u00a0 [Added later: Steven Roias identifies the bee as <em><strong>Bombus vancouverensis<\/strong><\/em>.]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image008.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/pastedImage-104.png\" width=\"597.6\" height=\"438.62307692307695\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bombus <\/em><em>vancouverensis<\/em>\u00a0 (Hym.:\u00a0\u00a0 Apidae)\u00a0 Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 After those tricky ones, you&#8217;d think the next one, a swallowtail butterfly, would be a bit easier.\u00a0 Well, the background colour is certainly pale.\u00a0 But are those black stripes quite thick enough for a <strong>Pale Tiger Swallowtail<\/strong>?\u00a0\u00a0 I don&#8217;t always find our two tiger swallowtails easy to tell apart, but I&#8217;ll go out on a limb and say <strong>Pale Tiger Swallowtail<\/strong> for this one.\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure if viewers disagree they&#8217;ll let me know in short order.\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 589px; a <strong>Lorquin&#8217;s Admiral<\/strong> at the top of the stairs near the concrete reservoir, a few <strong>Western Spring Azures<\/strong>, a <strong>Propertius Duskywing<\/strong> and a few <strong>Cabbage Whites<\/strong>.\u00a0 Also, of note we saw two <strong>Pale Tiger Swallowtails<\/strong> near the Pike Lake substation on Munn Road. \u00a0Western Tiger Swallowtails are finally starting to become more noticeable around Victoria as I even saw one down the street on Wascana near my folks&#8217;
