{"id":13785,"date":"2021-04-18T10:22:23","date_gmt":"2021-04-18T17:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=13785"},"modified":"2021-04-18T10:37:37","modified_gmt":"2021-04-18T17:37:37","slug":"april-18-morning-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=13785","title":{"rendered":"April 18 morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2021 April 18 morning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes that the two <strong>California Tortoiseshells<\/strong> that have been on the Mount Tolmie reservoir for several days were still there at 5:30 pm on April 17.\u00a0 They are best seen in the late afternoon or early evenung.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum continues:\u00a0 On April 4 we showed a photograph of some newly-hatched caterpillars of the <strong>Sheep Moth<\/strong>.\u00a0 Here are these same caterpillars today:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/pastedImage-83.png\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sheep Moth <em>Hemileuca eglanterina <\/em>(Lep.: Saturniiidae) Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know how the moth acquired its name &#8220;Sheep Moth&#8221; .\u00a0 (Ideas, anyone?)\u00a0 I have occasionally seen it called the &#8220;Elegant&#8221; Sheep Moth, although the recent addition of this adjective is quite inappropriate.\u00a0 The &#8220;<em>eglanterina<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0 in its scientific name does not mean &#8220;elegant&#8221; or anything like it.\u00a0 It refers to one of the frequent foodplants of the caterpillar, namely the Sweet Brier Rose <em>Rosa eglanteria<\/em>, the word &#8220;eglanteria&#8221; meaning &#8220;spiny&#8221;, referring to the prickles on the plant.\u00a0 The Sweet Brier Rose is also known as the Eglantine Rose, so those who would like an adjective before &#8220;Sheep&#8221; should perhaps call the moth the Eglantine Sheep Moth, rather than the Elegant Sheep moth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Marie O&#8217;Shaughnessy writes:\u00a0 I saw this beauty on Mount Douglas on the 16th April around 2- 3pm. All rather hot up there at that time.
