The genus is <strong><em>Bibio<\/em><\/strong> but I don&#8217;t know the species. Quite distinctive because the males&#8217; eyes are so much larger than the females&#8217;. Came across a number of these on the Log Train Trail in Port Alberni yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum comments: Although these are often called March Flies, in our area they are usually most noticeable in April.&nbsp; The group is named after a common European species, <em>Bibio marci<\/em>, which does not mean &#8220;of March&#8221;.&nbsp; Rather, it means &#8220;of Mark&#8221;, so called because the species is often abundant near to St Mark&#8217;s Day, which is April 25, and they are perhaps better referred to as St Mark&#8217;s flies.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 553px;\" hasheight=\"false\" setwidth=\"553\" setheight=\"553\" originalheight=\"1000\" originalwidth=\"1000\" name=\"\" title=\"Bibio.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image551dc335937cc.jpeg\"> <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image006.jpg\">St Mark&#8217;s fly &nbsp;<em>Bibio <\/em>sp.
