{"id":13614,"date":"2021-03-29T16:52:02","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T23:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=13614"},"modified":"2021-03-30T17:04:32","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T00:04:32","slug":"march-29-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=13614","title":{"rendered":"March 29"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2021 March 29<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 My first butterfly of the year today \u2013 a brief glimpse of a <strong>Cabbage White<\/strong> flying over Shelbourne Street.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhite Ian Cooper is continuing with his wonderful photographs of interesting animals.\u00a0 First, a remarkable photograph of a moth that has just ecloded (emerged) from its pupa probably only a minute or so ago.\u00a0 Its wings are just mere stubs \u2013 they will expand to their full size within the next fifteen minutes.\u00a0 At this stage, without being able to see the wing pattern, or much of it, it is impossible to identify it.\u00a0 Or is it?\u00a0 I had a guess myself, and I asked Libby Avis to have a guess, too, at this impossible task.\u00a0 Well, we both came up with the same genus \u2013 <strong><em>Orthosia <\/em><\/strong><em>&#8211; <\/em>\u00a0that&#8217;s pretty impressive, though I says it meself.\u00a0 Libby&#8217;s guess was <em>O. hibisci<\/em>; mine was <em>O.praeses. <\/em>Remarkable photograph in any case.<\/p>\n<p>Added later:\u00a0 Libby reminded me that the first thoracic segment of <em>praeses <\/em>should be a rich orangey-brown, so it&#8217;s definitely not <em>praeses<\/em>.\u00a0 I&#8217;m tempted now to label it as a definite <em>hibisci<\/em>, but I shan&#8217;t push my luck, so we&#8217;ll leave it as <em>O<\/em>. sp.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 446px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pastedImage-161.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Orthosia <\/em>sp.
