(Dip.:\u00a0 Calliphoridae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 I found a moth with 12 syllables on the wall of my apartment building in Saanich this morning &#8211;\u00a0 <strong><em>Hydriomena nubilofasciata<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>the <strong> Oak Winter Highflyer.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The caterpillar feeds on oaks in late spring \/ early summer.\u00a0 The moth is to be seen in late winter \/ early spring.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know that it flies particularly high.\u00a0 The large genus <em>Hydriomena<\/em> are known as highflyers \u2013 I suppose the person who first used this name happened to be looking at a moth that happened to be flying high.\u00a0 Followers of this site will have noticed that the highflyers are not always easy to identify to species \u2013 we have often had to leave them unidentified.\u00a0 <em>H. nubilofasciata <\/em>is, fortunately, relatively easy to identify \u2013 not least because it is seen in March\/April, when there&#8217;s not much choice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pastedImage-43.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Hydriomena nubilofasciata <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae) Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2021 March 9 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna \u00a0writes: This fly explored my back pack yesterday.
