{"id":1322,"date":"2015-03-15T21:23:03","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T04:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=1322"},"modified":"2016-03-13T16:38:10","modified_gmt":"2016-03-13T23:38:10","slug":"march-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=1322","title":{"rendered":"March 15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><html> <head> <meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=iso-8859-1\"> <\/p>\n<style type=\"text\/css\" style=\"display:none\"><!--P{margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} --><\/style>\n<p> <\/head> <body dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-size:12pt;color:#000000;background-color:#FFFFFF;font-family:Calibri,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"> <\/p>\n<p><strong>2015 March 15<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum shows a <strong>pug<\/strong> from his Saanich apartment this morning.&nbsp; Pugs are small geometrids of the genus <em>Eupithecia<\/em>.&nbsp; On first acquaintance they may seem to be rather uninteresting and boring.&nbsp; There are lots of them, all brown and grey and hard to distinguish.&nbsp; Yet it is a very successful group, with many species (more than 50 in British Columbia alone),  many of them quite common.&nbsp; The caterpillars feed mostly in flowers, and many of them are quite specialist, to be found in only a few particular species of flower.&nbsp; Some species in Hawaii, such as <em>E. orichloris<\/em>, are far from uninteresting or boring, for they capture and feed on insects that visit flowers.&nbsp;&nbsp; Two of our British Columbia species, <em>E. annulata<\/em> and <em>E. olivacea<\/em> are notoriously difficult to distinguish. I think the moth I show is probably <strong><em>E. annulata<\/em><\/strong>, but I wouldn&#8217;t want to eliminate <em>E. olivacea<\/em> as a possibility.&nbsp; Both species are conifer feeders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" hasheight=\"true\" setwidth=\"532\" setheight=\"435\" style=\"width: 532px;
