{"id":12977,"date":"2020-12-14T16:15:30","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T00:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=12977"},"modified":"2020-12-14T16:16:25","modified_gmt":"2020-12-15T00:16:25","slug":"december-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=12977","title":{"rendered":"December 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2020 December 14<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Ian Cooper recently photographed two small beetles at Colquitz River Park, identified for us by Charlene Wood as staphylinids (rove beetles).&nbsp; The first is a bit too dark to identify safely below Family level.&nbsp;  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 380px; margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"380\" originalheight=\"362\" rszimgcmd=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/pastedImage-72.png\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rove beetle (Col.: Staphylinidae)&nbsp; Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; The second (below) is in the genus <strong><em>Stenus<\/em><\/strong>, which, according to a<strong>  <\/strong>Web reference, is reputed to be the largest genus in the Kingdom Animalia, with a reputed 56,000 species.&nbsp;&nbsp; Charlene writes:&nbsp;&nbsp;  <em>Stenus<\/em> sp. are very cool, large eyed, rove beetles adapted to live at the edge of water margins. They can propel at high speeds across the surface of water by expelling &#8220;stenusol&#8221; from the tip of their abdomen, changing the surface tension and making   them pretty fantastic predators in this situation. They also have a very long extendable labrum with sticky pads for grasping prey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;  <\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 399px; margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"399\" originalheight=\"280\" rszimgcmd=\"100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/pastedImage-73.png\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Rove beetle <em>Stenus <\/em>sp.
