{"id":1153,"date":"2015-04-16T03:34:06","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T10:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=1153"},"modified":"2016-03-13T16:38:09","modified_gmt":"2016-03-13T23:38:09","slug":"april15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=1153","title":{"rendered":"April15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2015 April 15<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Annie Pang sends a photo of a bee fly (probably <em>Bombylius major<\/em>) from Gorge Park on April 9.&nbsp; The larvae of these flies are parasitoidal on bees, such as <em>Andrena <\/em>sp.&nbsp; The long, straight, proboscis is just that &#8211; it is used for imbibing nectar, not for stinging, and it is not as vicious as it looks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-1148\" title=\"Bee fly Pang.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image552f2db05f0b0.jpeg\" alt=\"\" name=\"\" width=\"588.8\" height=\"508.90854816824964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image552f2db05f0b0.jpeg 737w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/image552f2db05f0b0-300x259.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 737px) 100vw, 737px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Bee fly <em>Bombylius major <\/em>(Dip.:&nbsp; Bombyliidae)&nbsp; Annie Pang<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Nathan Fisk reports a good view of a <strong>Painted Lady <\/strong>nectaring on Sea Blush at Fort Rodd Hill on April 14, as well as several <strong>Sara Orangetips.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Interestingly, Jeff Gaskin also reports a lady, believed to be a <strong>Painted Lady<\/strong>, from Christmas Hill, on April 15, as well as two <strong> Sara Orangetips<\/strong>, a <strong>Western Spring Azure<\/strong>, a <strong>Propertius Duskywing<\/strong>, and several <strong>Cabbage Whites.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><strong>Scott Gilmore<\/strong> writes from Upper Lantzville:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;I found a number of fly puparia in a compost leaf pile on April 6th. I had no idea what they might be so I hung onto them.&nbsp;&nbsp; On the 11th flies started to emerge. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; After some correspondence, Jeremy and Scott agree that the flies are a species of <em><strong>Phaonia.&nbsp;
