\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>We are grateful to Dr Rob Cannings for identifying these flies, photographed by Rosemary Jorna.\u00a0 The first two photographs are of a tabanid biting fly<\/strong>, and Rosemary was rather daring in allowing it to settle on her hand.\u00a0 Tabanids can produce very nasty bites.\u00a0 The next two are an asilid robber fly<\/strong>.\u00a0 They are dangerous to other flies, but I don’t think (but wouldn’t like to test it) that they bite humans.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 Here’s another photograph of the Red Admiral <\/strong> chrysalis shown on July 4. Now the butterfly is just about to emerge;\u00a0 you can see the colour through the chrysalis skin.\u00a0 \u00a0My camera is mounted just in front of the chrysalis.\u00a0 The butterfly is probably emerging right now as I type these words, and will be fully out when I return to the camera.\u00a0 You only have to turn your back for a brief moment \u2013 then they will emerge.<\/p>\n
