{"id":11390,"date":"2020-07-08T16:32:29","date_gmt":"2020-07-08T23:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=11390"},"modified":"2020-07-12T16:00:37","modified_gmt":"2020-07-12T23:00:37","slug":"july-9-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=11390","title":{"rendered":"July 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2020 July 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary Jorna sends pictures of a beetle and two bees to challenge us.\u00a0 Scott Gilmore kindly identified the beetle as a female <strong>Rugose Stag Beetle <\/strong><strong><em>Sinodendron rugosum<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pastedImage-55.png\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Female Rugose Stag Beetle <em>Sinodendron rugosum <\/em> (Col.: Lucanidae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 This bumble bee will, I think, have to remain <strong><em>Bombus <\/em><\/strong><strong>sp.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pastedImage-56.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bombus <\/em>sp.\u00a0 (Hym.: Apidae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 We are grateful to\u00a0 Annie Pang, who points out that the tiny bee below is carrying a ball of pollen on its hind legs, which marks it as belonging to the Family Apidae (the same family as the Honey Bee, all our Bumble Bees as well as a few other bee genera).\u00a0 As well, its dark, nearly hairless body, combined with its tiny size (Rosemary estimates half a cm), marks it as a <strong><em>Ceratina<\/em><\/strong> species, common name &#8220;Small Carpenter Bee&#8221;.\u00a0 Unlike their more &#8220;fuzzy&#8221;
