margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pastedImage.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Misumena vatia<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>(Ara.: Thomisidae)\u00a0 Mr E<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 The next one, on Lavender, doesn&#8217;t seem to have had much success with any attempt at cryptic coloration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 482px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image006.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pastedImage-9.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Misumena vatia<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>(Ara.: Thomisidae)\u00a0 Mr E<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 I recognized the next spider as a crab spider, but I didn&#8217;t think it was <em> M. vatia<\/em> (writes Jeremy Tatum) until Dr Robb Bennett told me that it is indeed <em>M. vatia<\/em> \u2013 but a male rather than the more familiar female.\u00a0\u00a0 Its first pair of legs are remarkably long (part of the left front leg is hidden by a petal).\u00a0 The spider is missing its second leg on the right hand side.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image008.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pastedImage-2.png\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Male <em>Misumena vatia <\/em>(Ara.: Thomisidae)\u00a0 Mr E<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 On June 29 I saw a <strong>Pale Tiger Swallowtail<\/strong> nectaring on the <em>Philadelphus <\/em>bush at the entrance to the Mount Tolmie reservoir \u2013 noteworthy only because it was the first one I had seen this year.\u00a0 On June 30 I saw a <strong>Satyr Comma <\/strong>along the Lochside Trail between Lohbrunner&#8217;s and Blenkinsop Lake;\u00a0 I also found another <strong>Red Admiral caterpillar<\/strong> on the nettles there.\u00a0 Today I noticed that the <strong>Painted Lady <\/strong>pupa, which was shown on June 24 morning, was showing a lot of colour \u2013 next photograph:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 425px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image010.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/pastedImage-3.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Painted Lady<em> Vanessa cardui <\/em>(Lep.: Nymphalidae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0 After a few hours I noted that the butterfly within was becoming separated from the pupal shell as described by Jochen M\u00f6hr in the movie he made last year of the emergence of a Painted Lady butterfly from its chrysalis. This appearance shows that eclosion (emergence) is imminent.\u00a0 [Biologists please note:\u00a0 The noun is eclosion;\u00a0 the verb is eclode.] \u00a0Jochen&#8217;s movie can be seen in the entry for 2020 January 1 (currently on page 35).\u00a0 I waited patiently with my camera at the ready.\u00a0 Then I went to unload my laundry from the washer and put it in the dryer, a process that took three minutes max.
