\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>It’s a day for giant sawflies (Cimbicidae)<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u00a0– two photos of cimbicids came within minutes.\u00a0 First from Gordon Hart from the Highlands area:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Giant Birch Sawfly\u00a0 Trichiosoma triangulum <\/em> (Hym.: Cimbicidae)\u00a0 Gordon Hart<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Second is a sawfly larva, photographed by Bonnie Blackwood in the Gorge area, and identified by Libby Avis.\u00a0 The larva is particularly fond of Honeysuckle, which is where it was found.<\/p>\n

Abia americana <\/em>(Hym.: Cimbicidae)\u00a0 Bonnie Blackwood<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Gordon also sends a picture of a fearsome robber fly<\/strong>.\u00a0 We are not sure which of two similar species it is \u2013 it is possible that the two species may one day be “lumped”.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Much less fearsome is this bumblebee.\u00a0 I dare say it has a sting and could use it if it wanted to, but it is a much gentler animal, and I have never heard of someone being stung by one.\u00a0\u00a0 Thanks to Annie Pang for the identification.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 Here are photographs of a caterpillar and adult of a pug.\u00a0 The caterpillar fed on Mahonia<\/em>.\u00a0 Some of these pugs are just too difficult to identify, and this is one of them!\u00a0 Could be Eupithecia maestosa<\/em>.\u00a0 But equally could be something else!<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Jeff Gaskin writes:\u00a0 Today, June 27, I found another California Tortoiseshell<\/strong> in essentially the same spot where I saw one last year and also about the same time of year too.\u00a0 I found it in Summit Park even though the day was very cloudy and breezy.\u00a0 Not much else though except for a Lorquin’s Admiral<\/strong>, a Cabbage White<\/strong> and a Western Tiger Swallowtail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
