{"id":11106,"date":"2020-06-15T16:14:34","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T23:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=11106"},"modified":"2020-06-16T09:47:23","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T16:47:23","slug":"june-15-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=11106","title":{"rendered":"June 15"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2020 June 15<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary Jorna sends a beautiful photograph of a clearwing moth.\u00a0 They are not seen very often, and are hard to photograph, so this is quite an achievement.\u00a0 We have several native clearwings (Sesiidae), but this one is a rather recent European invader, <strong><em>Synanthedon myopaeformis<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong> known variously as the<strong> Red-belted Clearwing <\/strong>or the <strong>Apple Clearwing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pastedImage-102.png\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Red-belted Clearwing <em>Synanthedon myopaeformis<\/em> (Lep.: Sesiidae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Rosemary has also been photographing some bees in the Kemp Lake area.\u00a0 Thanks to Linclon Best and Annie Pang for identifications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pastedImage-103.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bombus occidentalis <\/em>(Hym.: Apidae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pastedImage-104.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bombus caliginosus <\/em>or <em>vosnesenskii <\/em> (Hym.: Apidae)\u00a0 Rosemay Jorna<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pastedImage-105.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bombus melanopygus <\/em>or<em> bifarius <\/em>(Hym.: Apidae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Mr E photographed these beetles and a spider near Sooke.\u00a0 Scott Gilmore identifies the beetles as <strong><em>Pidonia scripta<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em><em><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>The spider is young, which makes identification difficult, but Robb Bennett says probably <strong><em>Misumena<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>though possibly <em>Mecaphesa<\/em><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Why is the spider facing away from the beetles?\u00a0 Is it frightened, or hasn&#8217;t it noticed them, or is it being cunning?\u00a0 One viewer suggests that it is just embarrassed at possibly being mistaken for a voyeur.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/pastedImage-106.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Pidonia scripta <\/em>(Col.: Cerambycidae)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and probably <em>Misumena <\/em>sp.
