But in this case my two spellings of fourteen were intentional.\u00a0 In the version of Latin that I was taught, four was quattuor.\u00a0 However, when it comes to the spelling of scientific names, the spelling we are supposed to use is the spelling that was used in the original formal scientific description of the organism, whether the author used the &#8220;correct&#8221; spelling or not.\u00a0 I admit to not having looked up the original description of the beetle in question, but presumably, rightly or wrongly, it was quatuor there.\u00a0 There are a number of similar examples.\u00a0 For example, we have a wasp <em>Vespa pensylvanica<\/em>.\u00a0 Another spelling difficulty I have to watch out for is the beetle <em>Coccinella septempunctata\u00a0<\/em>and the moth <em>Adela septentrionella<\/em><em>.\u00a0 <\/em>[I have since learned that <em>septem<\/em> is the number 7, while <em>septentrio<\/em> is an adjective meaning &#8220;northern&#8221;.]<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>Jody Wells writes yesterday from Saanichton (Cordova) Spit:\u00a0 Not sure if I have seen this handsome little lad before.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jody is right &#8211;
