{"id":10436,"date":"2020-04-20T15:03:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T22:03:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=10436"},"modified":"2020-04-20T15:06:08","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T22:06:08","slug":"august-20-afternoon-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=10436","title":{"rendered":"August  20 afternoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2020 April 20 afternoon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Jochen M\u00f6hr writes from Metchosin:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; We have very regular visits of <strong>Sara Orangetips<\/strong> from about 11 am to 5 pm.&nbsp; Yesterday, I watched continuously&nbsp;from 3:45 to 4:45, and in that hour counted  <strong>18 Sara Orangetips<\/strong> which gives an average interval of a bit over three minutes between sightings.&nbsp; In reality the interval between sightings was more like five to twenty minutes, but repeatedly, I saw two or three simultaneously.&nbsp; Some females   hovered at length&nbsp;among the grasses and I think they were ovipositing. [The eggs are laid on  <em>Arabis glabra <\/em>and other related brassicaceous plants (not cabbage!).&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum]&nbsp; I saw about 1  <strong>Western Spring Azure<\/strong> for every three orangetips, and only one single  <strong>Cabbage White<\/strong> and one <strong>Comma <\/strong>all day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; But walking through the meadow, I got close to one <strong>Western Spring Azure<\/strong> and one  <strong>Moss&#8217;s Elfin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 605px; Jochen M\u00f6hr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Jochen continues:&nbsp; Today, I watched from my deck from 10:45 to 11:45 AM.&nbsp; In that hour, I had 19 sightings of  <strong>Orangetips<\/strong>,with up to three simultaneously appearing.&nbsp; I also saw two  <strong>Western Spring Azures <\/strong>&nbsp;and one white, presumably a <strong>Cabbage White<\/strong>, which engaged in a dance with one of the orangetips, both rising high above the tree tops.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes: <strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Schreckensteinia festaliella<\/em><\/strong> is quite a mouthful for a tiny moth scarcely larger than a House Fly.&nbsp; The Family name, Schreckensteiniidae, is probably not familiar to everyone.&nbsp; The   caterpillar feeds on Salmonberry and Raspberry, so, if you grow Raspberries, you might see one occasionally.&nbsp; You might even have eaten one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 470px;
