<\/strong>Jochen M\u00f6hr writes that the abundance of moths at his Metchosin home continues.&nbsp; Thus this morning:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>21 <\/strong><strong><em>Eupithecias<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>(among them some new ones, probably not  <em>annulata<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>17<\/strong><strong><em> Hydriomena manzanita<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1<\/strong><strong><em> Lithophane petulca <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3 <\/strong><strong><em>Orthosia praeses&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3<\/strong><strong><em> Triphosa haesitata&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3 <\/strong><strong><em>Venusia obsoleta \/ pearsalli<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;  <\/em>The adult moth hibernates &#8211; sometimes in numbers in caves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The pugs are a large genus, many of which are challenging to identify.&nbsp; This one is probably one of the difficult pair  <em>Eupithecia annulata\/oleracea<\/em>, both of which feed on conifers.<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image010.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"624\" originalheight=\"338\" width=\"568.8\" height=\"308.09999999999997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/pastedImage-42.png\"><br \/>  <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Eupithecia annulata\/oleracea <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae) Jochen M\u00f6hr<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; This next pug, a fairly large one, is boldly marked, and, one would hope, easy to identify.&nbsp; Alas, it is one of two look-alikes,  <em>E. ravocostaliata <\/em>and <em>E. nevadata<\/em>.&nbsp; The mid-costal dark patch is supposed to be triangular (like this one) on  <em>nevadata <\/em>and rectangular on <em>ravocostaliata<\/em> &#8211; but who knows?&nbsp; I haven&#8217;t reared either, writes Jeremy Tatum, but the caterpillar of  <em>ravocostaliata<\/em> has been found on <em>Salix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Pronunciation:&nbsp;&nbsp; RAY-vo costallyAHta.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 624px;
